LATEST UPDATE: Monster Hunter XX is coming to the west, y’all! That’s right, Nintendo Switch owners outside of Japan can finally play a localized version of the game as the renamed Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate gets an Aug. 28, 2018 release date. I already have the English version so I've started adding the localized Quest names as I verify them. I'll start with the Village missions because those can be soloed easily then go over the Guild missions after that. I mean, I’m sure some of you have noticed that I just sorta-kinda made up the English translations for the mission names. Perhaps I should just leave them for posterity, hmm? I will also add the new translations for the monster names as well. Anyway, it should provide a nice change of pace from Monster Hunter World!

Hunters Hub Key Quests. This is a list of Guild Key Quests in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (and Generations) that need to be completed to unlock higher star quests and Hunter Rank. These are also known as Guild Quests and Multiplayer Quests. You don't have to complete every quest in the game to unlock the next rank.

UPDATE 8: Wanna hear a story? Actually, make that stories. For folks interested in Monster Hunter’s JRPG spinoff, I’ve put together a handy-dandy and most egg-cellent Monster Hunter Stories Guide. Yes, I’ve still got a terrible pun habit.

UPDATE 7: Hi y’all. In preparation for Monster Hunter XX for the Nintendo Switch, I’ve updated some key parts of this guide. All Village and Guild Quest mission information is now up to date for folks who have yet to clear everything or reach Free Rank by breaking the rank cap. On a related note, I also updated the Monster Hunter MHX to MHXX Save Transfer Guide to include instructions not just for the 3DS but for the Switch as well. All I can say is, there’s an app for that. Anywho, I hope this tides everyone until Monster Hunter World comes out!

UPDATE 6: Key Quest information is steadily posting in Japan, y’all! I’m starting to update this guide as I speak, starting with the Guild Hall G Rank quests as I assume that’s what most folks are interested in. Per usual, I’ll start verifying these after I get the game but feel free to chime in or e-mail me if you notice anything. Also, don’t, uh, take the English translations for some of the quests too seriously.

UPDATE 5: Monster Hunter XX is almost upon us (yay!). Unfortunately, I got sent two copies of MHX instead due to an order mix up (boo!). Now I’ve got my fingers crossed that my return does not get lost in the mail or I’m out $100-plus. In the meantime, I’m seriously considering just downloading the digital version. Regardless, I’ll make sure to update the key quest guide as soon as I get some information.

UPDATE 4: So anyone itching to be 'Double Crossed?' Check out our first article on the followup up to Monster Hunter X and Generations, 'Transferring Monster Hunter X save data to MHXX.'

UPDATE 3: Hello, Barrage Earrings fans. To help you out, I have now included a section on how to get all 10 Arena Quests that you have to clear (Rank A) to get them.

UPDATE 2: All Village and Hunter Hub Guild Quests are updated! I will also continue to update the Village Requests as I get them.

UPDATE 1: Howdy, folks. Got my review copy of Monster Hunter Generations and I am now updating this guide with the localized English from the Western release! I have finished the Village campaign but might take a bit of time to go through the latter half of the Gathering Hall or, as they're called now, Hunters Hub quests as I've pretty much been soloing the game prior to release. In the meantime, this guide has initially been verified with the Japanese version so you can simply check the requirements and they will still work for Monster Hunter Generations. I am also leaving the Japanese quest names for folks who want to continue using this guide for Monster Hunter X. Any thoughts, comments or contributions? Feel free to share them in the comments section.

The guide

Hello, fellow hunters. Or Nyunters. Or is Nyanters? I’m so confused.

So after feverishly refreshing the U.S. Postal Services product tracking page, one of the two Monster Hunter X games I ordered from Japan finally arrived. Not sure why the other one hasn’t been scanned since leaving Los Angeles a week earlier. Hopefully, my local post office doesn’t have any Melynxes..

In the meantime, I’ve been scouring Japanese “kouryaku” sites for Monster Hunter X info in preparation for my long trek through the various Village and Guild quests. I figure I might as well share all this information I gathered with you, my fellow hunters in arms. Or paws.

Here’s a list of key quests in Monster Hunter X for folks who prize mission efficiency, complete with the Japanese quest names and my poor attempts at translating some of them into English (notice that some of them are based on quests from older games!). I’ll make sure to verify the list and add more information as I go through the game but feel free to drop a note at the comments section if you notice anything wrong or just want to pump up my ego. After all, flattery will get you everywhere with me. This list also will be updated with English info following the release of Monster Hunter Generations in the West!

Sub: Wound Gammoth's legs, 900z

— Took me a while to figure this out in the Japanese version but my early toiling is now your gain. This basically requires you to do quests from the Pokke Village chief to unlock. At some point early in the game when you talk to this village chief, you will unlock the 2-star mission “Slay the Giaprey!” (ギアノス10頭の討伐). Finish that and you will then be able to talk to the chief again to unlock another 2-star quest, “The Mountain Rough Rider!” (雪山の荒くれ者), which requires you to hunt a Bulldrome. Wrap up that mission and talk to the Pokke chief again and you will get the 3-star mission “The Shadow in the Mountains” (雪山に潜む影) to hunt a Khezu. Finish that and talk to the chief again and you will get access to the 3-star quest “No Go on the Popo” (忍び寄る気配), which requires you to gather 3 Popo Tongues. Talk to the Pokke Village chief one more time and you should unlock the Gammoth (Gamuuto) mission. This mission grants access to shards at the Pokke Village cave with the giant sword.

The Thunderclaw Wyvern 玉の閃電

Main: Hunt an Astalos (ライゼクス/Raizex) 5100z

Sub: Break the comb of the Astalos, 900z

— This one requires you to talk to the Kokotto Village chief. Notice a pattern here? Just like Pokke, you’ll eventually have an opportunity to talk to the Kokotto chief to unlock the 2-star mission “Slay the Velociprey!” (ランポスたちを狩猟せよ!), which requires you to hunt 10 of the beasts. Finish it and talk to the chief again to unlock the 2-star “Slay the Velocidrome” (ドスランポスを討伐せよ!) quest. After that, chat up the village again until you get the 3-star “Defeat the Yian Kut Ku” (大怪鳥イャンクックを倒せ) mission and finish that. This will then unlock the 3-star quest “The Wyvern’s Nest” (潜入!飛竜の巣), which will lead to the Astalos (Raizex) once finished.

The Entrancing Water Dancer 淡紅の泡狐がたゆたうか

Main: Hunt a Mizutsune (タマミツネ/Tamamitsune) 5100z

Sub: Wound Mizutsune’s head, 900z

— This time, you’ll need to talk to the Yukumo Village chief to unlock the 2-star mission “Bye Bye Jaggia” (渓流のジャギィノス退治). After that, talk to the chief to get the 2-star quest “Arzuros the Azure Beast” (青熊獣アオジラ). Report to the chief to unlock the 3-star “Royal Spit Take” (ロアルドロスを狩猟せよ!) mission. This will unlock the 3-star quest “A Forest Fracas” (ざわめく森) where you hunt a Bulldrome after talking to the Yukumo Village chief, which then leads to the Mizutsune (Tamamitsune) mission.

Updated 10:49 PM EST Dec 12, 2019

The Nintendo Switch is getting a pretty amazing game today. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate brings us the best Monster Hunter game since, well, since Monster Hunter World launched earlier this year.

For the uninitiated, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is a remastered version of Monster Hunter Generations for the Nintendo 3DS. It features improved controls, more monsters, and upgraded visuals.

If you're jumping into the game for the first time and you're not sure where to begin, start here. This beginners guide will hook you up with all the knowledge you need to best hunter or huntress you can be.

How to prepare for a hunt

The key to any good hunt is preparation. Knowing what you need to take on your hunts and the strategy you'll employ to take your target down is paramount to success in Monster Hunter: Generations Ultimate. Here's the quick list of stuff you should take care of before every hunt.

Eat a hearty meal

While you won't be totally sapped of your energy without eating in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, you'll want to make sure you take a moment to eat before embarking on any hunt or mission. Eating will allow you to bolster your stats in order to make life a little easier.

There are several dishes to eat, each with their own unique attributes. Some might increase your attack and stamina, while others could give you a nice boost to your health total. Deciding which meal to eat before each particular mission is something you'll have to figure out for yourself according to your own playstyle, the target monster, and more, but whatever you decide, eat whenever you can.

Check your gear

While you do have a hunter rank in this game, the biggest thing that contributes to how strong you are is your gear. That includes all your armor and the weapon you choose to go into a hunt with.

You'll don pretty basic pieces of armor starting out, with the new armor you can buy and craft helping you gain more elemental and physical resistances. In the beginning, just focus on getting a full set of basic armor with physical resistance, as that'll be the field of opponents you take on early.

Grab your items

Don't forget to fill your satchel before you head out. You'll have a number of items you can take with you before each hunt or gathering mission. At the least, you'll want potions, antidotes, traps, and whetstones. You'll also want custom coatings for your bow and guns if you happen to play a ranged weapon.

While you may not need all of these items on any one hunt, loading up on the essentials will ensure you can handle any adverse situation thrown your way.

Gather materials to craft items and gear

One of the things you'll come to learn about Monster Hunter is that the game is just as much about preparing to hunt as the hunt itself. You'll go on a lot of runs where your agenda is to gather materials, whether it be for crafting your new gear or getting the herbs you need to make life-saving potions. Here's what to look out for.

Take herbs and honey to make potions

You'll see a lot of plant nodes in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Herbs and honey will all be found in copious amounts, and you'll combine these base ingredients to make strong concoctions, better weapon coatings and ammo, and enhanced tools to help you out in your hunts. You don't have to carry back loads of this stuff on each hunt, but regular gathering — especially during the early game — will ensure you have a basic list of essentials to keep you healthy.

Collect bones and hide from the monsters you kill to make weapons and armor

During gathering parties or smaller hunts, be sure to collect all the material you can from any monster you kill. You may not need the bit of material that particular monster drops now, but there will come a time when you may need it for a particular build or crafting need.

Quick note: try to use armor pieces from the same set. This will ensure that all your relevant armor skills activate and that you get the most out of any built-in resistances it has.

How to hunt and take down your first monster

With all of your gear, weapons, and support items, you're ready to take on your first hunt. Here's how to get the most out of each encounter.

Choose your weapon and style of choice

More often than not, you'll know which monster it is you'll be going after before you commit to fighting it. As you get more experience you'll find yourself taking different weapons to fight different monsters.

Don't worry about that in the early going, though. It's important to find a weapon you like and learn its ins and outs. The cool thing about Monster Hunter is that your fighting style is not locked into the character you made, but changes based on the weapon and hunter style you use. As such, don't be afraid to switch your build up or experiment with other weapons at any point in the game. You're free to use whatever you want, whenever you want.

Each weapon has a tutorial associated with it to help you learn the strengths, weaknesses, and all the different combos you can do. There are 14 weapons in all, and they each offer unique advantages:

  • Great Sword: This is a massive sword that might be slow to swing, but delivers massive damage (and can block some, too).
  • Long Sword: This blade is basically a katana, and offers a nice balance between speed and damage.
  • Sword and Shield: This classic combination gives you both offensive and defensive potential in the same kit.
  • Dual Blades: Become roguelike with the daggers. Attacks are fast and hit hard.
  • Hammer: Hit a monster over his head with one of these and they won't know what to do.
  • Hunting Horn: This weapon can make you and your allies stronger. It's typically only useful in group play, but experienced hunters can make it work solo.
  • Lance: Poke around at the monsters from behind the comfort of a nice-sized shield.
  • Gunlance: Take the lance and add gunpowder to it. That's what the gunlance is.
  • Switch Axe: One of two dual-stance weapons in the game. Switch between a giant axe or a giant sword.
  • Charge Blade: See Switch Axe, but substitute the giant sword for a classic sword and shield setup.
  • Insect Glaive: This staff uses the power of insects to imbue the hunter with greater power.
  • Light Bowgun: When you want to hit hard from afar and like the way a crossbow shoots, the bowgun is not a bad choice.
  • Heavy Bowgun: You'll be slower with it, but this one will pierce even harder and more accurately than the regular one.
  • Bow: Your standard hunting affair, complete with the ability to coat your arrows poisonous and explosive ways.

This is also where you'll be choosing your Hunter Style. There are four such styles in the game, and they'll come with a number of hunter arts you can use to help you pull off your most devastating moves:

  • Guild: You can use 2 Hunter Arts with this style.
  • Striker: While your basic attacks are simple, this style lets you have three Hunter Arts, and they charge faster, too.
  • Aerial: This is what lets you jump high into the sky to mount monsters. You only get one Hunter Art for this overwhelming power.
  • Adept: This style rewards players for good mechanical skills by allowing you to dodge attacks and counter with an even bigger blow of your own.

Don't stress too much about being perfect with the weapons right away. Your first few hunts will be easy to get you acclimated with the game's combat system. Just worry about figuring out which one you like the most!

Customize your Palico

Take some time to make sure your furry companion known as a Palico is well-equipped. Not only can the Palico help you fight and gather items, you can also play as it in Prowler Mode.

There are some advantages to running around like a cat. For one, you have unlimited stamina and you gather items and material much faster than a typical hunter can. And while it doesn't have a whole lot of power, it does come with its own set of moves and abilities to let you contribute to the battle.

Don't be afraid to bring help

You don't have to go it alone if you don't want to. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate supports co-operative play with up to four people able to join a hunting party at once.

Don't be afraid to use this to your advantage. Can't quite beat that high-ranked monster on your own? Getting together with some of your hunter friends could be just the ticket you need to topple that challenge. Trust us — no one's going to judge you for needing a hand every now and then.

Use your skills and tools for victory

Now comes the hunt. You'll be dropped into the starting zone and begin searching for the target. Monsters tend to spawn in specific areas and you'll pick up on these potential spawn points over time, but the general rule of thumb for a beginner is to simply run through each zone and keep your eyes peeled.

When it comes time to actually face the beast, don't tense up. You should be more than well enough equipped to handle your prey. Be sure to exercise patience when going in for the attack. Strike where the beast is weakest and take your shots when there are proper openings.

And don't forget about all the tools you have at your disposal. You have healing items, traps, attribute boosters, and even bombs to help you out. Whetstones will be used to sharpen your weapons and make sure they continue to hit the beasts with as much damage as possible. Use them as often as you need to get the job done.

Oh, and do take care not to get hit more often than you're hitting the monsters. They're much stronger than you and will absolutely eat your lunch — or eat you for lunch — if you're not careful.

Against bigger monsters, target those weak points to not only deal more damage, but also to break some of its parts. Breaking a tail or a leg or some such will make it more vulnerable to your attacks, and may also force the monster to drop more of its materials upon defeating it.

Take on more quests for more rewarding gameplay

Quests will be your usual route for early-game monster hunting. They'll not only help ease you into the game, but will also offer rewards that'll help you in your endeavors. Be sure to do as many of these quests as you can in order to maximize your potential.

Before too long, you'll find yourself swimming in materials to craft new armor. You'll take that new armor to go take on tougher monsters. You'll get the materials from that monster and do it all over again to see just how far you can go. Welcome to the exciting, rewarding cycle that is Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate.

Go slay some beasts

There's a lot to Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, but with thes beginner's guide you should now possess a basic understanding of how to be a professional hunter. There will be a lot of information thrown your way, and things will seem overwhelming at first.
